Why Being a Digital Nomad Is Actually a Thing
So… digital nomads. Sounds kinda fancy, right? Like you’re sipping lattes on a rooftop in Bali while your emails magically answer themselves. Not exactly true (I tried that once, my emails didn’t answer themselves, and the Wi-Fi cut out mid-Zoom). But yeah, 2025 is basically peak digital nomad year. Everyone’s remote now, companies are chill with it, and countries are literally fighting for us with visas, coworking spaces, and fast internet.
I did my first real “nomad stint” in 2022 and let me tell you… it’s fun but messy. Choosing the right country is key. You don’t wanna end up in some place with slow Wi-Fi and a “desk” that’s just a box on a chair. True story.
Portugal – Lisbon & Porto
Portugal is still a classic. Lisbon is lively, hip cafés everywhere, and coworking spaces for days. Porto is quieter, cheaper, and full of wine (obviously a bonus).
Pros: good weather, fast internet, people speak English a lot, amazing food (I ate pastel de nata like 3 times a day and regret nothing).
Cons: Lisbon is expensive in touristy spots. Summer = sauna.
Fun fact: Portugal has a super easy digital nomad visa. Work remotely legally for a year, maybe extend it. Also, tons of people post pics on Instagram with “coworking with ocean view.” Yep, it’s real.
Thailand – Chiang Mai & Bangkok
Thailand is still the OG. Chiang Mai = slower pace, cheap apartments, strong nomad community. Bangkok = chaos, big city energy, nightlife.
Pros: affordable, tons of coworking spaces, street food heaven.
Cons: visa rules can be annoying, Wi-Fi sometimes flaky outside city.
Story: I tried working from a tiny café in Chiang Mai once. Wi-Fi kept dying. Spent 15 minutes just refreshing Zoom and eating fried noodles. Stressful but also kinda funny.
Mexico – Mexico City & Playa del Carmen
Mexico is blowing up for nomads now. Mexico City = huge, cultural, fast internet. Playa del Carmen = beach vibes, good expat scene.
Pros: cheapish, tacos everywhere, flights to US easy if you need to.
Cons: safety varies by area, public transport outside big cities is meh.
Reddit/TikTok are obsessed with Playa del Carmen. I get it, I worked in a café 100 meters from the ocean. Was addictive.
Estonia – Tallinn
Estonia is small, modern, techy, and super nomad-friendly. Tallinn is walkable, with digital nomad visa stuff that’s easy to get.
Pros: reliable internet, easy banking, beautiful old town (aesthetic points).
Cons: winters = dark, depressing, kinda cold.
Fun fact: Estonia literally invented the digital nomad visa. They’ve had e-residency for years. You can run a European company from your laptop anywhere. Mind = blown.
Georgia – Tbilisi
Yes, Georgia. Tbilisi is cheap, fun, and underrated. Amazing food, coffee, wine, and mountains nearby.
Pros: super cheap, nice nomad community, visa-free for a lot of countries for 1 year.
Cons: Wi-Fi hit or miss sometimes, English not everywhere, public transport confusing.
I ate khachapuri every day while working from cafés. Laptop survived. I didn’t. (jk, laptop fine, I was just slow).
Bali, Indonesia – Canggu & Ubud
Bali… cliche but true. Canggu = surf + coworking + cafes. Ubud = chill, rice paddies, yoga vibes.
Pros: tropical, cheapish, strong nomad community.
Cons: crowded in some areas, visa stuff confusing, Wi-Fi can be bad.
Story: tried to work in Ubud jungle café. Monkeys stole my sunglasses. Wi-Fi fine tho.
Vietnam – Ho Chi Minh City & Da Nang
Vietnam is rising. Ho Chi Minh = busy, coworking friendly. Da Nang = smaller, beachy, chill.
Pros: cheap, amazing coffee, friendly locals, food everywhere.
Cons: traffic insane, heat brutal sometimes, Wi-Fi outside cities weaker.
TikTok/Reddit love Vietnam for nomads. Sitting with iced coffee, scooters swarming, is a vibe.
Tips for Picking Your Nomad Country
-
Check internet first (obvious, but crucial).
-
Visa rules matter. Don’t mess up your stay.
-
Cost of living: Instagram pics don’t pay the rent.
-
Community: even introverts need people. Facebook, Reddit, local meetups help.
-
Weather: if you hate heat, Bali is hell in summer. If you like sun, Estonia winter = sad.
Wrapping Up
Digital nomad life is amazing if you pick the right country. Portugal, Thailand, Mexico, Estonia, Georgia, Bali, Vietnam — all good choices, each with pros and cons. Pick a place that fits your style, work vibe, budget, and tolerance for adventure (or chaos).
And yeah… it’s not just Instagram pics. It’s about living somewhere new, learning stuff, working while monkeys or street dogs are your coworkers, and maybe spilling coffee on your laptop once or twice. That’s digital nomad life in 2025.
